Hotel Phoenicia is a 5 star hotel in Malta, built in Art Deco style.
The hotel has 132 bedrooms and suites. From the hotel there are great views over the over the capital Valletta with the harbour, churches, fortifications and parks. Incidentally, the hotel itself is also surrounded by a beautiful park-like garden to which all guests have access.
The hotel has a restaurant, bar and spa department. It is a hotel where many prominent and famous people have stayed overnight.
The architect behind the building is the Scottish architect William Binnie.
Many years passed from the start of construction to the opening of the hotel. The construction of the Art Deco hotel started in the 1930s and was completed in 1939. But when World War II broke out, the buildings was requisitioned by the British military and the Royal Air Force personnel moved in. In April 1942, the hotel was hit by aerial bombardment. The damaged hotel was rebuilt and completed in April 1948.
The hotel therefore only opened as a hotel in November 1947. In the 1960s, another floor was built at the hotel.
