This chapel was built in 1289 within the walls of an old fortress erected by Count Palatine Otto IV of Burgundy in the 13th century.

La Chapelle Saint-Georges d'Ornans est l'ancienne chapelle du château d'Ornans, protégée des monuments historiques, situé à Ornans dans le département français du Doubs.
Histoire
En 1289, une première chapelle est construite par le comte Othon IV de Bourgogne à proximité du château. Elle fut détruite en 1300 à la suite de la révolte des baron comtois contre le roi de France, et reconstruite vers 1369. Elle est une nouvelle fois détruite en 1477 par les troupes de Louis XI. La chapelle est reconstruite vers 1500, et est le seul édifice épargné lors de la destruction du château par les troupes de Louis XIV en 1674.
La chapelle est inscrite au titre des monuments historiques en 1968.
Rattachement
L'église fait partie de la paroisse de la Haute Vallée de la Loue (paroisse d'Ornans) qui est rattachée au diocèse de Besançon.
Architecture
La chapelle est construite en bordure de l'éperon rocheux où se trouvait le château. D'une superficie approchant les 40 m2, elle possède des voûtes supportées par des croisées d'ogives et un toit recouvert de laves. Trois fenêtres ogivales éclairent l'intérieur et l'entrée est surmontée d'un clocheton. L'édifice a été restauré en 2018 grâce au projet de la fondation du patrimoine qui vient d'être récompensé en 2019 par le jury régional Bourgogne-Franche-Comté des Rubans du Patrimoine.

The Chapel Saint-Georges d'Ornans is the former chapel of the castle of Ornans, protected by historical monuments, located in Ornans in the French department of Doubs.
History
In 1289, a first chapel was built by Count Otto IV of Burgundy near the castle. It was destroyed in 1300 following the revolt of the Comtois barons against the king of France, and rebuilt around 1369. It was destroyed again in 1477 by the troops of Louis XI. The chapel was rebuilt around 1500, and was the only building spared during the destruction of the castle by the troops of Louis XIV in 1674.
The chapel was listed as a historical monument in 1968.

The church is part of the parish of the Haute Vallée de la Loue (parish of Ornans) which is attached to the diocese of Besançon.
Architecture
The chapel is built on the edge of the rocky spur where the castle was located. With a surface area of about 40 m2, it has vaults supported by cross-ribs and a roof covered with lava. Three ogival windows illuminate the interior and the entrance is topped by a bell tower. The building was restored in 2018 thanks to the project of the Heritage Foundation, which has just been awarded in 2019 by the regional jury Bourgogne-Franche-Comté Rubans du Patrimoine.
