De Zaanse Schans is één van de toeristische toplocaties van Nederland.
Het is een unieke woon- en werkbuurt met musea, molens, winkels, oude ambachten, restaurants, een informatiecentrum en een rondvaartdienst. Deze buurt geeft een uitstekend beeld van de Zaanstreek in de zeventiende en achttiende eeuw. Tussen de traditionele houten huizen, pakhuizen en windmolens krijgt men op de Zaanse Schans het gevoel terug te zijn in lang vervlogen tijden.
Historie
De Zaanstreek is een eeuwenoud veenweidegebied, dat zijn naam ontleent aan de rivier de Zaan. Deze belangrijke Noord-Hollandse waterweg zorgde voor de natuurlijke afwatering van de veengebieden. Aan het eind van de dertiende eeuw moet er al een omvangrijk stelsel van dijken en dammen hebben bestaan.
Gebouwen
De historische ontwikkeling van bouwconstructies, architectuur, versieringen en van de gebruikte traditionele bouwmaterialen is op de Zaanse Schans uitstekend te volgen. Hout was het beste bouwmateriaal op de slappe ondergrond van laagveen. Bovendien was hout ruim voorhanden, want veel molens waren houtzaagmolens."
