TEXT FROM THE HISTORICAL MARKER

Cassius Marcellus Clay-U.S. Minister to Russia— (1861-62); (1863-69) —Buried in this cemetery is Cassius Marcellus Clay. As a result of his diplomacy in Russia, friendship between the two powers reached its highest peak. This helped prevent intervention of England and France during Civil War and provided an atmosphere which made possible purchase of Alaska, 1867.
