"Oh, yeah...people come in all the time to take 'Where am I?!' pictures for Facebook posts," said Charles of
Original Log Cabin Homes, when I awkwardly asked if it would by OK to take a photo of this muffler man. He sent me on my way from the main office, down a path to the last model log cabin in line. A friendly landscaper I passed on the path instructed me to go in the back door and through the cabin. I found myself standing on the home's front porch and immediately below the brightly colored pair of Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox. You'll practically run into the beast's belly, she's so close overhead.
This woodsman wears black boots, blue jeans, a red shirt emblazoned with the company logo, and a blue knit cap. He's got black hair and a full beard and holds a large axe. His bovine companion is sky blue with yellow horns. Her snarling jaws chomp a log in two.
The log home builder's web site has a page dedicated to the duo. It reads in part:
Roadside Nostalgia – He Casts a Giant Shadow
Towering some 40 feet high over Interstate 95 stands Paul Bunyan, adjacent to Old Glory waving in the breeze, at The Log Cabin Homes sales center at Gold Rock exit 145 in Rocky Mount, NC, greeting drivers along the highway...
This Muffler Man version Paul Bunyan is now being used by Log Cabin Homes for its current advertising and promotion campaign...
We Found Babe!
After more than a decade-long exhaustive search, Babe was finally found in the north country of Minnesota all alone but not forgotten...Now, they are together again at The Original Log Cabin Homes.
Hint: For better portrait photos, arrive in the morning when the sun shines on the front of the statues who face towards the northeast. The after-noon sun is immediately behind the elevated roadside giants when you're standing on the ground in front of them. That said, the yard south of the cabin offers views of their backsides, too.
Getting there: From I-95 in either direction take Exit 145 (4 - 48 - 301 / Gold Rock, Rocky Mount). At the end of the ramp, turn right at the Route 4 intersection with Route 48 (by Super 8 Motel). Take your first right to North Halifax Road which will bring you across a bridge over I-95. The business property is just around the bend on your left/the south side of the road.
