[EN] “The Torreón de los Guzmanes is located in the Plaza del Corral de las Campanas, next to the monument to San Juan de la Cruz, in Ávila Capital. It is also known as the Palace of the Múxica family and the House of the Countess of Crescente. It is currently the headquarters of the Diputación de Ávila.

The majestic Torreón de los Guzmanes, which is part of the Palacio de los Guzmanes, is one of the most beautiful noble houses in the city.

It was built in 1513 by order of Garcibáñez de Mújica, on top of another construction that previously belonged to Sancho del Águila.

The Renaissance quadrangular tower stands out, executed in ashlar masonry and granite masonry, topped with trefoiled merlons and machicolations, with overhanging watchtowers with loopholes in the corners, denoting its defensive character.

The porticoed patio with a double gallery, due to its dimensions, is similar to the 16th century patios of the Provincial Museum of Ávila and the Chamber of Commerce. On the ground floor there is a gallery with stretched stone arches and cornices on which rosettes and large shields are arranged. The entire complex is supported by 12 columns of the Tuscan Doric order.

The upper floor is accessed through a door decorated with Gothic motifs and a monumental stone staircase divided into two sections.

The Torreón basements were restored as an exhibition hall. Today the permanent headquarters of La Vetonia: Culture and Nature, which also houses temporary exhibitions in its central hall.

In 1878 King Alfonso XII, during a visit to the city, occupied this palace to stay, which is still remembered today thanks to an inscription that is located over the opening of one of the doors on the ground floor of the patio.”
