Gonzalo Mendiola was only 26 years old when he died at the end of 1928 and this Woodmen of the Work memorial grave marker was put in place. However, this marker is now shared with Rafael C. Mediola, probably an older brother, who died in 1969.

The San Fernando Cemetery 2 has its main entrance at 746 Castroville Road, San Antonio, TX (or 29.41682 -98.55268). The former main entrance was at the corner of the intersection of Cupples Road and Castroville Road, but over time the city expanded and the traffic flow no longer could facilitate a corner entry, so its main entrance was moved to the middle of the cemetery along Castroville Road for safety reasons.
Once in the cemetery, follow the GPS map to the east edge of the cemetery that is bounded by Cupples Road. It is in this older part of the cemetery where this Woodmen of the World memorial headstone is found near the middle of the section between Cupples Road and the closest internal cemetery path. The gravesite is the 6th row in from Cupples and in line with its junction at Apperson Avenue. From inside the cemetery it is 7 rows from the internal cemetery pathway.
The Woodmen of the World monument has the circular WOW insignia engraved at the top of the main column. Below the WOW logo is an oval black and white photograph on a ceramic tile embedded into the monument. This picture is center on an etching of two crossed axes. Below the picture and crossed axes is the scroll area. In the top center of the scroll is a large engraved Christian Cross, followed below the cross by the following text:
Gonzalo
Mendiola
Dic. 28, 1928
Edad 26 Anos
-----
D. E. P.
However, another ceramic black and white photo of an older man has been embedded into the stone at the bottom of the scroll. The original bottom area between the scroll and the base stone the monument sits on has been ground smooth and engravings read as follows:
Rafael C.
Mendiola
1894 - 1969
It is likely that Rafael C. Mendiola is an older brother of Gonzalo Mendiola since there is an 8 year span from Rafael's birth date and the date of Gonzalo's early death.
