This homemade tombstone was carved from a crudely shaped piece of concrete, with words that have been etched by hand into the concrete with some sort of tool. This is one of several homemade tombstones of this type from the 1850s in this section of East Mount Cemetery in Greenville Texas. In 1850s Texas you may tombstones out of whatever you could find since most early farmers in this area had very little money to purchase a tombstone.

The tombstone reads as follows:

"SACRED to the MEMORY of
HARBERT SPENCER
who departed this life
April 18, 1853
Aged 40 years"

In the modern era, relatives of Mr. Spencer have placed a a modern engraved granite memorial at the foot of his grave which reads:

"Harbert Spencer
1812-1853"
