The San Fernando Cemetery 2 has its main entrance into this cemetery at 746 Castroville Road, San Antonio, TX (or 29.41682 -98.55268). The former main entrance was at the corner of the intersection of Cupples Road and Castroville Road. Over time the city expanded and the traffic flow no longer could facilitate a corner entry, so its main entrance was moved to the middle of the cemetery along Castroville Road for safety reasons.
Once in the cemetery, follow the GPS map to the east edge if the cemetery that is bounded by Cupples Road. It is in this older part of the cemetery where this Woodmen of the World memorial headstone is found. It is a big one! It was designed as a family plot headstone and it certainly lives up to that! The tree-like monument has its tallest central pillar flanked on both sides with the traditional stack of wood logs on both sides of the center tree trunk marker. The main tree trunk monument is engraved at the top with a Christian Cross, under which the traditional Woodmen of the World round crest is engraved. Between the WOW crest and the scroll portion is a oval ceramic black and white photo of a man in a suit and tie, assumed to be Francisco G. Suarez. This ceramic photo is centered in the middle of two crossed axes. The large scroll area below the photo contains not only the birth and death data for Francisco G. Suarez, but below his information is a ceramic photo of his wife and her birth and death dates. The scroll area of the center pillar reads as follows:
Francisco
G. Suarez
Nacio
Mar. 22, 1883
Fallecio
Enero 26, 1941
----
Recuerdo De Su
Esposa
Aurora M.
Suarez
Dec. 20, 1896
June 11, 1981
But there are three more family members also included on this monument.
On the viewer's left, the extension of the base of this Woodmen of the World monument is a ceramic black and white photo of a woman and engravings related to her are engraved in a rectangular panel which states the following:
Madre
Amanda Hawkins
de Montemayo
Fallecio Agosto 13, 1937
un recuerdo de sus hijos
Then, on the viewer's right side of this monument is another rectangular panel on the extension of the right side of the base. On the top half of the panel, there is a black and white ceramic photo of a man in a coat and tie, assumed to be man described below the photo. On the bottom half of this same panel is text describing a woman's life data, and an oval ceramic color photo of a woman (who lived to be 99 years old!) The engraving for both people reads as follows:
Juan E. Montemayor
Dic. 27, 1902 - Dic. 29, 1972
Recuerdo de su esposa e hijos
------------
Ma. Luisa Z. Montemayor
Mar. 27, 1919 - Aug 21, 2018
Beloved Mother and Grandmother
Commentary:
Of the five people names on this memorial stone, Amanda Hawkins de Montemayor only had the date of death in 1937 listed, so we don't know how old she was when she died.
Francisco G. Suarez died in 1941 at about 58 years old.
Juan E. Montemayor died in 1972 at about 70 years old.
Aurora M. Suarez died in 1981 at about 85 years old.
Ma. Luisa Z. Montermayor died in 2018 at about 99 years old!
This monument has an unusual amount of people named on it and at least one lived an exceptionally long lifetime.
