"Le 9 septembre 1943, Ajaccio fut la première ville de France et de l'Europe alliée à s'être libérée. Après l'insurrection, le département sera libéré le 4 octobre 1943 à Bastia par les troupes françaises avec l'aide de la Résistance, et c'est sur l'aérodrome de Campo Dell'Oro que le général de Gaulle retrouvera pour la première fois le sol français le 5 octobre 1943
Lors de son discours d'Ajaccio, le 8 octobre 1943, il déclarera "la Corse a la fortune et l'honneur d'être le premier morceau libre de France" et c'est d'Ajaccio qu'il veut crier l'espoir "de la voir la mer latine redevenir un lien au lieu d'être un champs de bataille".
