Los comienzos se remontan a 1472, cuando se funda un beatario para religiosas franciscanas. El Papa Inocencio VIII concedió en 1484 autorización para que las religiosas pudieran constituirse en comunidad conventual. En 1506 construía la iglesia el arquitecto palentino Bartolomé de Solórzano. En 1507 fue bendecida la iglesia aunque las obras finalizaron en 1513.

De una sola nave, se cubre con crucería gótica de terceletes. Pero el entablamento se perfila ya con formas renacientes. Tiene coro alto y bajo; éste, junto al presbiterio. Pero más relevante es el alto. La iglesia obedece a la tipología monasterial. El testero de la capilla mayor se cubre con un retablo de escultura. La arquitectura es obra de Francisco Velázquez, responde a una disposición clasicista, inspirada en el retablo mayor de la Colegiata de Villagarcía de Campos, que a su vez copia el de El Escorial. Esta obra se contrata en 1613. De las estatuas y relieves se encargó Juan Imberto. Pero hubo una mudanza. En 1621 Gregorio Fernández contrató el relieve que muestra a Santa Isabel, reina de Hungría, ofreciendo limosna a un pobre.

En el lado del evangelio se halla un retablo dedicado a San Francisco, realizado en la década 1570, por el escultor francés, afincado en Valladolid, Juan de Juni. La visita a la clausura lleva directamente al claustro, que se hizo el mismo tiempo que la iglesia y, sin duda, por el mismo Solórzano. Tiene planta rectangular y ocupa dos pisos organizados con columnas toscanas.

En la iglesia se encuentra enterrado el conquistador Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca.

The beginnings date back to 1472, when a beatarium for Franciscan nuns was founded. In 1484, Pope Innocent VIII granted authorization for the nuns to establish themselves as a convent community. In 1506 the church was built by the Palencia architect Bartolomé de Solórzano. In 1507 the church was blessed although the works ended in 1513.

With a single nave, it is covered with a Gothic ribbed tierceron. But the entablature is already taking shape with renaissance forms. It has a high and low chorus; this one, next to the presbytery. But more relevant is the height. The church obeys the monasterial typology. The front wall of the main chapel is covered with a sculpture altarpiece. The architecture is the work of Francisco Velázquez, responds to a classicist arrangement, inspired by the main altarpiece of the Collegiate Church of Villagarcía de Campos, which in turn copies that of El Escorial. This work is contracted in 1613. Juan Imberto was in charge of the statues and reliefs. But there was a move. In 1621 Gregorio Fernández commissioned the relief that shows Saint Elizabeth, Queen of Hungary, offering alms to a poor man.

On the gospel side there is an altarpiece dedicated to Saint Francis, made in the 1570s by the French sculptor Juan de Juni, based in Valladolid. The visit to the cloister leads directly to the cloister, which was built at the same time as the church and, without a doubt, by Solórzano himself. It has a rectangular plan and occupies two floors organized with Tuscan columns.

The conquistador Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca is buried in the church.
