Built under the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), the Great Wall at Badaling has been open to the public in 1957. It is the site of the most visited section of the Great Wall of China.
The Great Wall of China is a series of fortifications built along an east-to-west line across the historical northern borders of China in part to protect the Chinese Empire or its prototypical states against intrusions by various nomadic groups or military incursions by various warlike peoples or forces.
Badaling is located approximately 80 km (50 miles) northwest of Beijing, about 1 hour 30 minutes from the city center. The Badaling section of the Great Wall is the best preserved and the most popular amongst all the sections. With an altitude over 1,000 meters (3281 ft) above sea level, it had a strategic position in ancient times.
Badaling gained a worldwide reputation by being enlisted in the World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in 1988. About 370 state leaders and VIPs have climbed Badaling and admired the magnificence and beauty of its scenery.
