"The ‘Apuakehau stream in the makai (oceanside) region 'owed into the sea through the legendary coconut grove of Helumoa. This area of Waikiki was once marshland that surrounded numerous 'shponds that belonged to Hawaiian royalty.
Waikiki earned its name from the abundance of freshwater sources that fed the area’s fishponds, or loko i‘a. The fish raised here provided sustenance for the Hawaiian people. Waikiki was an ideal location for this type of 'sh cultivation, providing the delicate mix of fresh and sea water needed to create the nutrients that sustain life in a 'shpond.
There were many types of 'shponds. The most common were built along the shoreline and featured a man-made wall that extended into the sea, creating an outer boundary around the 'shpond. These walls were constructed with different types of rocks and were 'lled with pieces of coral and dirt. This allowed fresh water and salt water to mix, creating the optimum environment to grow certain types of limu (seaweed) that fed the varieties of 'sh and sea creatures living within the 'shpond walls.
Along the rock wall of the loko kuapa, were one or more makaha (sluice gates) with small slits, which allowed small 'sh to enter the 'shpond, but kept the larger 'sh inside. The makaha was placed near the currents outside the 'shpond wall. Hawaiians observed that this is where 'sh would gather.
Beyond the 'shponds and a little further out to sea is one of the most famous surfing spots in Waikiki - Kalehuawehe. Known today as Castles Surf Break, Kalehuawehe was the site of many surf contests and a favorite sur'ng spot for the Hawaiian royalty. It is said that Kalehuawehe, literally meaning to remove the lehua, got its name after the chief Pi‘ikoi went sur'ng there wearing a lehua lei, which he then gave to a chiefess who had joined him on the excursion.
Beyond the fishponds and a little further out to sea is one of the most famous surf spots in Waikiki - Kalehuawehe."
