Fittstown is a small unincorporated community in south central Pontotoc County. There is a small business section along US 377, and there are between 50 and 100 residents here. Besides the church's active
Facebook page, they have no significant online presence beyond web-spidered directory listings, and there is no church history to be found. A stone worked into the fabric of the sanctuary out front indicates that they organized in 1935 and this building dates to 1958.
A Blessing Box stands by the church entrance. If you have the resources to waymark, you probably have the resources to leave a little snack or meal for someone less fortunate than you.
On the north side of the sanctuary is a small cemetery of four burials -- Findagrave lists five, with no photo for an infant, Zeno Colbert. Findagrave lists it as "Fittstown Cemetery", but unless there's a story, it's probably best to go with other narratives that refer to it as "Fittstown Baptist Church Cemetery." It appears to have been vandalized, disturbing the final resting places of two adults and two (or three) children.
Elisabeth Brown is one of the two adults, and she may have been the granddaughter of the other, Jessie Brown. Her headstone has been broken and repaired, but it is off its base and on its side -- a photo of it intact is on Findagrave. Time and the elements have taken their toll on the headstones, but a good cleaning would at least help with the inscriptions. Elisabeth's is the most legible, and it reads:
Elisabeth
Brown
Born
1875
Died
Sept. 1
1907.
