"The building on Kruisstraat was built in 1774 as a double residence. It was commissioned by Jan Kiers, who amassed a fortune in the East Indies. He turned it into an East Indian house. Jan Kiers died in 1788, after which the heirs sold the residence in three parts. The East India house was divided in two and the dwelling house to the west was sold separately.

The left half of the East India House came into the hands of 't Nut van 't Algemeen. This was a group of well-to-do citizens who, among other things, helped the poor. For almost the entire 19th century, this building remained in the hands of the gentlemen's group.

In 1899, the gentlemen sold it to D.L. Wolff (visit link) , who started a shoe factory there. He also bought the right half of the East India house in 1928 and then added it to his shoe factory. Earlier, he had bought and demolished the property west of the residence for an expansion of his factory. The shoe factory became one of the largest employers in Meppel, after it also expanded at the rear.

The factory was sold in 1953 to the brothers Remmelt and Peter van Urk. They started a leather goods factory there, called Urzo. The name comes from their surnames: Van Urks Zonen. Again, there was considerable expansion at the rear.

The former residence underwent a large-scale change in 1993. The first floor layout was completely demolished and an open space with pillars was created. The 1993 changes still define the appearance on the first floor on Kruisstraat."
