Besides being an administrative center, Ushuaia is a light industrial port and tourist hub. It is located roughly 1,100 kilometres (680 mi) from the Antarctic Peninsula and is one of five internationally recognized Antarctic gateway cities. The main economic activities are fishing, natural gas and oil extraction, sheep farming and ecotourism. Tourist attractions include Tierra del Fuego National Park & Lapataia Bay and the Museo Maritimo & del Presidio de Ushuaia which offers views of the Yámana, English and Argentine colony, including the years as a penal colony. From the port of Ushuaia, there are several catamaran cruises and boat excursions that allow you to observe colonies of seabirds, sea lions as well as the magnificent marine landscapes present all around. Localized waymark sites (Structures, Landmarks, Businesses) should reflect standard waymarking visit criteria (Logs & photos).
