With the arrival of the French fleet at Delaware Bay on July 8, 1778, General Washington had the resources he needed and planned to attack the British forces in Newport, Rhode Island. He sent General Lafayette and his 2800 troops north from New Jersey to participate in the attack. Along the route, Lafayette and his army encamped in East Haven, CT A monument containing a plaque affixed to a boulder commemorated this encampment. The plaque is inscribed:
