El martes 28 de julio de 2020 se colocó la réplica en bronce de la talla original de la escultura a Santo Domingo de Guzmán Mariano Timón, hecha en la misma piedra que el pedestal. El monumento original, que se inauguró en 1958 y que ahora permanecerá resguarda en la iglesia conventual para evitar su deterioro, se sufragó con una suscripción popular, la aportación de los Padres Dominicos y las cofradías de la ciudad.

Esta réplica de color oscuro resalta aún más sobre el remozado monolito, en el que una vez limpio se puede leer sin problemas la leyenda "Santo Domingo de Guzmán. 1170-1221. Fundador de la orden de predicadores y del santo rosario. Discípulo y maestro en la Universidad de Palencia. 1958. M. Timón."

Santo Domingo de Guzmán es el fundador y padre de la Orden de Frailes Predicadores, conocidos como Dominicos.

Nació en Caleruega (Burgos) hacia el año 1170, pero estuvo muy unido a Palencia, en cuya universidad, la primera creada en España, estudió.

Según una antigua tradición vivió no muy lejos del actual convento de San Pablo, aunque cuando fue ordenado sacerdote fue enviado a la catedral de Osma donde fue subprior del Cabildo. Consciente de los graves problemas de la Iglesia en aquellos tiempos, con un clero deficientemente preparado y con un desmesurado afán de riquezas, en medio de una sociedad carente de todo por las guerras y las enfermedades, organizó en el sur de Francia un grupo de sacerdotes, que viviendo el ideal de vida apostólica, anunciaran la Buena Noticia de salvación, desde la pobreza y con una sólida formación. La tradición de la Iglesia le atribuye la fundación del rosario, y murió «rodeado de sus frailes» al mediodía de un 6 de agosto en Bolonia (Italia), donde se veneran sus restos.
