The warehouse was built in 1777 seven years after work on the canal started. The canal was built to carry bulk cargoes across the Pennine Hills and connect the port of Liverpool, and access to the sea, with inland industrial cities and agricultural areas.<br<>
The canal carried such cargoes as coal and limestone but also grain.
These days the canal has lost its industrial use but is popular with leisure boaters. Like most cities with former busy wharves and docks, the area has been redeveloped, with apartments, offices and bars and restaurants.
Although no longer used the crane acts as a reminder of its past industrial use.
