"De enkelspoors spoorophaalbrug in de spoorlijn tussen Nieuw-Amsterdam en Schoonebeek ligt over het Stieltjeskanaal. De brug is in 1971 gebouwd bij de verbreding van het kanaal en ter vervanging van een oude uit de Zaanstreek afkomstige klapbrug die in de jaren '40 bij de aanleg van de lijn hier geplaatst was. De reden dat de brug open staat is dat het Stieltjeskanaal door scheepvaartverkeer wordt gebruikt en dat het onzinnig is om dan steeds weer de spoorbrug te bedienen omdat dit spoor al sinds 4 september 1996 niet meer gebruikt wordt."

"In 1973 werd het Stieltjeskanaal ingrijpend verbreed en gemodemiseerd. Sluis Knol (no. 1) en de vier bruggen werden ge­sloopt. Ervoor in de plaats kwamen een hoog betonen viaduct en een modem sluizencomplex met een brug op de plaats van Sluis no. 2.

De gemeenschap Stiel­tjeskanaal werd hierdoor in tweeën geknipt, maar gelukkig zorgt de buurt­vereniging nog voor een­heid. Op de plaats van Sluis Knol bevindt zich nu Recreatiebedrijf Engelage en in de gevel van het door Helene en Frans Engelage bewoonde huis prijkt nog steeds het opschrift: 'Sluis no.1'.

En er is nóg een ophaal­brug, een spoorbrug. Ze dateert uit 1946 is eigen­dom van de NAM en ze staat sinds 1996 constant omhoog. Een industrieel monument aan een monu­mentaal kanaal.

Sta er eens een ogenblik bij stil, bij dit 120-jarig mo­nument."
