CIVIC TRUST LEEDS
TOWER WORKS
Built for Harding & Son. makers of pins,
cards and combs for the textile industry.
Its smallest chimney (Thomas Shaw 1864)
was modelled on the Lambert Tower in
Verona. The largest (William Bakewell
1899) on Giotto's Campanile
in Florence.
1864-1981
The works are on the south side of the Leeds Liverool Canal close to the Aire and Calder Navigation.
The south side of the canals was where most of the heavy industry was based in Leeds helped by access to transport on the canals. This particular site has been a Leeds landmark for many years due to the ornate chimneys which are listed buildings.
Other parts of Leeds have been redeveloped and this area is now part of a large regeneration project. The outside wall of this area is being left as it is, along with the chimneys. The rest of the site will eventually have 245 apartments within it.
