As you walk through the streets of Cassel, you will find this Equestrian Statue of Marshal Foch which sits proudly in the city park. Between October 1914 and June 1915, it was here, in Cassel, that Marshal Foch settled. Inaugurated on July 7, 1928 in the presence of the Marshal himself and the President of the Council Raymond Poincaré, the tall bronze statue stands proudly above and facing the panorama over the plain of Flanders.

The Statue

"The man was not enthusiastic about an idea that the inhabitants of Cassel particularly cherished: erecting a statue in his honor. There it is, however, at the top of the mountain, this statue, in bronze, of human size, representing the great proud man, riding an impeccable stallion. A work for which the sculptor asked his model to pose on a horse, yes… but a merry-go-round horse.

A monument on which, on closer inspection, we can see traces of bullets… memories of revanchist Germans during the Second World War.

The Character

" Ferdinand Foch is a general, marshal of France and member of the French Academy, born on October 2, 1851 in Tarbes, in the Hautes-Pyrénées, and died on March 20, 1929 in Paris.

In the last year of the First World War, in the spring of 1918, he was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Allied forces on the Western Front.

Shortly before the end of the war, in August 1918, he was elevated to the dignity of Marshal of France then, after the war, to those of Marshal of the United Kingdom (in 1919) and of Poland (in 1923).

On his staff, Foch imposed a discipline of life that allowed no breaches. He usually devoted the morning to sedentary work. For lunch, he gathered at his table his principal officers and his closest collaborators. He remained calm no matter how dire the situation. When the meal was over, he took a walk, since no inspection was required.

The ordinary resumed its course until dinner, which lasted from 7 to 8 p.m. At this time came the end-of-day reports. The general demanded to be very accurately informed. Then he gave his orders and established his forecasts for the next day. At 11 p.m. sharp, he retired. En vous promenant dans les rues de Cassel, vous trouverez cette Statue équestre du Maréchal Foch qui trône fièrement dans le parc de la ville. Entre octobre 1914 et juin 1915, c’est ici, à Cassel, que le Maréchal Foch s’installa. Inaugurée le 7 juillet 1928 en présence du Maréchal en personne et du Président du Conseil Raymond Poincaré, la haute statue de bronze se dresse fièrement au-dessus et face au panorama sur la plaine de Flandres.

" L’homme n’était pas enthousiaste à une idée que les habitants de Cassel chérissaient particulièrement : ériger une statue en son honneur. Elle est pourtant là, au sommet du mont, cette statue, en bronze, de taille humaine, représentant le grand homme fier, chevauchant un étalon impeccable. Une œuvre pour lequel le sculpteur a demandé à son modèle de poser sur un cheval, oui… mais un cheval de manège.

Un monument sur lequel, en y regardant de plus près, on discerne des traces de balles… souvenirs d’allemands revanchards lors de la seconde guerre mondiale.

" Ferdinand Foch est un général, maréchal de France et membre de l’Académie française, né le 2 octobre 1851 à Tarbes, dans les Hautes-Pyrénées, et mort le 20 mars 1929 à Paris.

La dernière année de la Première Guerre mondiale, au printemps 1918, il est nommé commandant en chef des forces alliées sur le front de l'Ouest.

Peu avant la fin de la guerre, en août 1918, il est élevé à la dignité de maréchal de France puis, après la guerre, à celles de maréchal du Royaume-Uni (en 1919) et de Pologne (en 1923).

À son état-major, Foch imposa une discipline de vie qui n’admettait aucune entorse. Il consacrait généralement la matinée au travail sédentaire. Pour le déjeuner, il réunissait à sa table ses principaux officiers et ses collaborateurs les plus proches. Il conservait son calme, quelle que soit la gravité de la situation. Le repas terminé, il faisait une promenade, dès lors qu’aucune inspection n’était requise.

L’ordinaire reprenait son cours jusqu’au dîner qui durait de 19 à 20 h. À ce moment arrivaient les rapports de fin de journée. Le général exigeait d’être très exactement renseigné. Ensuite, il donnait ses ordres et établissait ses prévisions pour le lendemain. À 23 h précises, il se retirait. Pensant sans cesse aux souffrances du champ de bataille, Foch savait qu’il tenait en main la vie de millions d’hommes et que la moindre erreur de sa part entraînerait des sacrifices inutiles (« C’est dur de voir tomber tant d’hommes, sacrifices sanglants et cruels. Plus ils sont cruels, plus ils créent ce devoir impérieux de ne pas être vains »). "
