Massena was an early settlement along the St. Lawrence River. The town was incorporated in 1802. "The first school was taught at the site of Massena village in 1803 by Gilbert Reed, and in the same year the first bridge was built across the Grass River at that point, and shortly after one across the Raquette River at the Springs."
