According to Christian theology, Mary was a young Jewish woman from Nazareth, Judea, now a town in Palestine. She was married to Joseph but yet remained a virgin. Mary was chosen by God to conceive a child by the divine intersection of the Holy Spirit. Upon birth, the male infant was named Jesus.

According to Catholic theology Mary was also miraculously conceived, the Immaculate Conception, and did not die by was taken directly into heaven, the Assumption of Mary.

When Jesus was about 30 years old he attracted an avid following as an itinerant preacher who taught about the Kingdom of God. The Roman occupiers of Judea thought considered him a threat to the prevailing status quo and executed him by crucifixion.

His followers believe he rose from the dead and was the divine Son of God. They developed his new religion, Christianity, based on his life and teachings.
