The Center Point Cemetery is in the south part of Center Point, TX where San Antonio Road splits into CR 480 and Elm Pass Road. Where these roads form their junction is where the entrance gate of the cemetery is found on the west side of San Antonio Road. Follow the center pathway of the cemetery road all the way to the back of the cemetery. Several yards beyond the curb of the pathway is where the WOW monument for Curtis W. Godwin is found.
This Woodman of the World headstone is a bit different than most in two ways. First, what is usually a tree shaped monument is a smooth-sided cubical monolith that has a pointed top, like a pyramid. The second unusual feature is the metal medallion attached at the bottom of the front side. This medallion shows a man riding a horse in the its center, and has text wrapping around the edge of the medallion that reads: United Methodist Minister.
The indicatios it is a WOW monument is the classic round Woodman of the World insignia engraved in the top part of its front side and customary convention of giving the name and the dates, follows by some encouraging text. In this case the text engraved reads as follows:
Curtis W. Godwin
July 15, 1861
Nov 6, 1914
There shall be no
night there
The United Methodist Minister medallion is attached at the bottom of the monolith but is centered beneath the engraved text.
