It's pure speculation, but his death in late 1918 could have been due to the influenza pandemic that was raging at the time. This stone marker was made to resemble something you would see prior to about 1860, with "Gone but not forgotten" inscribed in the "head", with a mourning dove directly below. The inscription is framed by a box, and it reads:
