Pietz's Kuchen Kitchen is one of the independent bakeries in South Dakota famous for Kuchen, a German style custard pie with various fruits and flavorings.

Blasterz had never heard of kuchen until Daddy Blaster was looking at South Dakota foods on the Food Network before vacation. We decided that we would visit a couple of these little bakeries on our way north to Saskatchewan, and we are very glad that we stopped in at Pietz's.

We got to meet the owner Roger Pietz, who was an absolute hoot! He was shocked to find out that there are no Kuchen in Texas, and that we had never heard of it.

We left with three Kuchen, frankly two more than Mama Blaster was prepared to buy. But when the kuchen are coming out of the kitchen having been cooked an hour before, you buy a couple extra :).

Not only did we enjoy the kuchens that we bought to eat with lunch, nine hours and 300 miles later we discovered that the only restaurant on the Standing Rock Sioux reservation was the 100% smoking-allowed casino restaurant. Asthmatic girls cannot eat in restaurants that allow smoking, and no one wants to deal with asthma flares and breathing treatments on vacation.

The only other thing open on the reservation at 9 PM was a small very dingy convenience store that did not have hot food. Blasterz are pretty flexible and resourceful on the road, but at the same time we were all starving and not overjoyed at the prospect of convenience store sodas, chips, and peanut butter crackers for dinner.

So instead we sliced the blueberry kuchen from Pietz's (that we were saving for lunch tomorrow) into quarters with a pocket knife and ate it for dinner in the Standing Rock Sioux gas station parking lot. Everyone was very happy, and that dinner was one of the best and most memorable we had in South Dakota.

NOTE: The day Blasterz visited, 20 July 2019, Pietz's was just getting into the frozen cook-at-home pizza business, which they had come up with to have something to be making all year. When you don't have fresh fruit you don't make kuchen.

At the time, the Pietz family was trying to get their pizzas and kuchen into supermarkets statewide. The hurdle had been Pietz's only had kuchen for a few months, but supermarkets needed a product that they could rely on stocking all year.
