This tall concrete monument honors Sakakawea, the Shoshone Indian woman who, with her husband, accompanied Lewis and Clark on their mission to explore the Louisiana Purchase. Sakakawea was asked to serve as a translator with native tribes encountered along the journey. Her skills interacting with native tribes, especially those west of the Rockies, were critical to the success and continuation of the Corps of Discovery trek.

Blasterz estimate that the concrete obelisk stands about 25 feet tall. The round relief medallion of Sakakawea and her baby Jean Baptiste, framed with Eagle feathers, is made of bronze and is about 2 feet wide.
Her name, SAKAKAWEA, is etched by hand to the bronze by the artist.

The English translation of her name, BIRD WOMAN, is etched at the center of the bottom of the medallion.

Also along the bottom we find the date of this work and the sculptor who created it: (c) 2001 Bronzkota Jack Shillingstad

The sculptor, Bronzkota Jack Shillingstead signed his name.
