The current brick church is the fifth building occupied by the First Church. The church was founded in colonial Connecticut in 1713 by Puritan settlers as the established church of the colony. The current Greek Revival style church was built in 1943 to replaced the fourth church built in 1882.
Rising from the front of the gable roof is a tall four stage steeple. The bottom stage is a square tower with a circular multi-pane window. The tower has pinnacles at the four corners. Next is a belfry with rounded tops and louvered windows. Urns are at each corner. The third stage is an octagonal cupola with multi-pane windows with rounded tops on the front and the back and smaller urns a each corner. At the top of the steeple is an octagonal spire topped with a finial and the Chi-Rho monogram of Christ.
The Greek Revival style First Church has a portico entrance with four Ionic columns supporting the pediment. In the center of the pediment is a circular multi-pane window. The central double door entrance has a curved lintel. Above is square 4 by 4 pane window. On each side of the central entrance is a single door entrance.
The south side of the church is six bays deep. The first bay has three offset rectangular windows. The next five bays have two story high rectangular windows. The north side has an auxiliary building attached beyond the third bay. A three bay deep wing projects from the back of the church.
