The Georges River is the second largest river which drains the Sydney Basin. Just downstream of this guage there is a small dam which seperatds the tidal flow from the fresh water flow upstream.
The maximum height which can be recorded is & metres. At this level, the flood would top the bank and spread over the floodplain. Lower lying areas of Liverpool, east of this location flood regularly and have required houses to be demolished due to regular flooding.
As this location is not flood prone, it provides an easily accessible location to monitor rising river levels.
