Sandal Castle is a ruined medieval castle in Sandal Magna, a suburb of the city of Wakefield in West Yorkshire, England, overlooking the River Calder.
The castle was built in the 1100s and survived until 1645 when the Royalists who held the castle in the English Civil War were defeated. Already badly damaged it was largely demolished in 1646 to render it unusable.
Queen Elizabeth II became Queen in 1952 and so in 2022 there were national celebrations for her Platinum Jubilee. Here at Sandal Castle local organisations and individuals submitted items to be put into a time capsule and placed down the castle well. The time capsule will be left for 50 years and many children were involved in the project. This was to make ita s inclusive as possible, but also in the hope that some will still be around when the capsule is opened in 2072.
A blue plaque was erected on a small wall next to the well.
