Description physique

Situation générale: Cette carrière est localisée à environ 2 km au sud-est de Senzeille et à 3 km au sud-ouest de Neuville. La route N 978 passe à moins de 250 m au sud du site. On y a exploité un bioherme de calcaire frasnien.
Description du site: Cette carrière de marbre, relativement étendue, est accessible par un chemin carrossable partant de la route de Senzeille; elle comprend trois secteurs.
- Un grand terre-plein, où arrive le chemin d'accès, s'étend entre la route de Senzeille et l'excavation; très fréquenté, il est sillonné de chemins passant entre les gros blocs calcaires répartis un peu partout. La végétation y est surtout cantonnée autour des blocs, entre les chemins et sur les bordures. Le long de la route, dans une zone boisée, subsiste l'ancien bâtiment d'exploitation avec une cheminée encore debout. - L'excavation, à la différence de la majorité des carrières de marbre de la région, a été creusée principalement à flanc de coteau; les parois verticales sciées, de couleur rosée à gris-rosé, présentent un intérêt esthétique indéniable, en plus de leur intérêt géologique. Le fond de la cavité est inondé et la petite pièce d'eau est apparemment dépourvue de végétation.
- Autour de l'excavation s'étendent plusieurs pierriers.
* Au nord de l'excavation et du terre-plein se trouve un premier pierrier, accessible par un sentier rejoignant le sommet des parois rocheuses; il est en grande partie arboré et plus ou moins envahi de ronces. * Au sud-est de l'excavation, la pente est couverte d'un pierrier formant sur le haut (au même niveau que la partie supérieure des falaises) un éboulis instable dont le petit replat supérieur est encore bien ensoleillé.
* Au sud-sud-est de l'excavation s'étend un pierrier assez grand, parallèle au ruisseau, le Ri des Boles. Il est boisé (bouleau dominant) et colonisé par des ronces; les pierres n'y sont plus guère apparentes. Fréquentation du site: Forte: lieu de pique-nique, site d'entraînement spéléo (cf. guide de l'escalade en Belgique, 1991). Présence de graffitis sur des pans rocheux et de gros blocs du terre-plein. Le site a jadis servi de site d'entraînement de tir. Présence de déchets: Déchets de pique-nique non notés. Environnement du site: Bois.

Description biologique

Les ligneux poussant sur le terre-plein et sur les différents pierriers appartiennent principalement aux espèces suivantes: Salix caprea, Betula pendula, Fraxinus excelsior, Quercus robur, Populus tremula, Carpinus betulus, Acer campestre, A. pseudoplatanus, Cornus sanguinea, Ligustrum vulgare, Crataegus monogyna (au moins), Rosa canina, Ribes uva-crispa,...; Rubus sp.
La strate herbacée présente sur le terre-plein est principalement composée d'espèces de pelouses sèches, mais aussi d'espèces à affinités forestières, surtout sur les bordures: Urtica dioica (peu abondante, en bordure), Arenaria serpyllifolia, Herniaria glabra, Cerastium cf. semidecandrum, Hypericum perforatum, Viola hirta, Erophila verna, Anagallis arvensis, Potentilla neumanniana, P. argentea, P. reptans, Fragaria vesca, Sanguisorba minor, Aphanes arvensis, Trifolium dubium, Epilobium angustifolium, Geranium robertianum, Erodium cicutarium, Linum catharticum, Vincetoxicum hirundinaria, Centaurium erythraea, Echium vulgare, Myosotis ramosissima, M. arvensis, Thymus pulegioides (abondant), Acinos arvensis (peu abondant), Origanum vulgare, Teucrium scorodonia, Ajuga reptans, Prunella vulgaris, Euphrasia cf. stricta, Veronica arvensis, V. serpyllifolia, Scrophularia nodosa, Succisa pratensis (quelques plants), Hieracium pilosella, Leontodon saxatilis, Inula conyzae, Bellis perennis, Arctium sp., Aira praecox (plusieurs plages), Catapodium rigidum, Convallaria majalis (une plage), Listera ovata (> 5 pieds), Asplenium ruta-muraria (blocs rocheux),... Sur les pierriers et leurs replats plus ou moins arborés selon les endroits, ont été notées: Sagina apetala, Arenaria serpyllifolia, Hypericum hirsutum, Fragaria vesca, Potentilla neumanniana, Sanguisorba minor, Euphorbia amygdaloides, Geranium robertianum, Vincetoxicum hirundinaria (abondante), Cynoglossum officinale, Teucrium scorodonia, Ajuga reptans, Clinopodium vulgare, Veronica officinalis, Verbascum sp., Carex digitata, C. sylvatica, Arum maculatum, Dryopteris filix-mas (peu abondante),...; bryophytes.

Histoire

Carrière de marbre où subsiste un bâtiment d'exploitation avec cheminée. Le site est pris comme exemple dans le livre relatif au patrimoine industriel de Wallonie.

Physical description

General situation: This quarry is located about 2 km southeast of Senzeille and 3 km southwest of Neuville. The N 978 road passes within 250 m south of the site. A frasnian limestone bioherm was exploited there.
Site Description: This relatively large marble quarry is accessible by a carriage road from the Senzeille road; it comprises three areas.
- A large terre-plein, where the access road arrives, extends between the Senzeille road and the excavation; very frequented, it is criss-crossed by paths passing between the large limestone blocks spread out a little everywhere. The vegetation is mostly confined around the blocks, between the paths and on the edges. Along the road, in a wooded area, the old mining building with a chimney still standing remains. - The excavation, unlike the majority of marble quarries in the region, was dug mainly on the hillside; the vertical sawn walls, pinkish to pinkish-gray in color, are of undeniable aesthetic interest, in addition to their geological interest. The bottom of the excavation is flooded and the small water feature is apparently devoid of vegetation.
- Around the excavation lie several scree slopes.
* To the north of the excavation and the median is a first scree, accessible by a path joining the top of the rock faces; it is largely treed and more or less overgrown with brambles. * To the south-east of the excavation, the slope is covered by a scree slope forming an unstable scree on the top (at the same level as the upper part of the cliffs), the small upper flat of which is still very sunny.
* To the south-southeast of the excavation lies a fairly large scree slope, parallel to the stream, the Ri des Boles. It is wooded (birch dominant) and colonized by brambles; the stones are no longer visible. Frequentation of the site: High: picnic place, caving training site (cf. guide de l'escalade en Belgique, 1991). Presence of graffiti on rocky sections and large blocks of the platform. The site was once used as a shooting training site. Presence of trash: Picnic waste not noted. Site Environment: Woodland.

Biological description

The woody plants growing on the median and on the various scree slopes belong mainly to the following species: Salix caprea, Betula pendula, Fraxinus excelsior, Quercus robur, Populus tremula, Carpinus betulus, Acer campestre, A. pseudoplatanus, Cornus sanguinea, Ligustrum vulgare, Crataegus monogyna (at least), Rosa canina, Ribes uva-crispa,...; Rubus sp.
The herbaceous stratum present on the median is mainly composed of dry grassland species, but also of species with forest affinities, especially on the edges: Urtica dioica (not very abundant, on the edge), Arenaria serpyllifolia, Herniaria glabra, Cerastium cf. semidecandrum, Hypericum perforatum, Viola hirta, Erophila verna, Anagallis arvensis, Potentilla neumanniana, P. argentea reptans, Fragaria vesca, Sanguisorba minor, Aphanes arvensis, Trifolium dubium, Epilobium angustifolium, Geranium robertianum, Erodium cicutarium, Linum catharticum, Vincetoxicum hirundinaria, Centaurium erythraea, Echium vulgare, Myosotis ramosissima, M. arvensis, Thymus pulegioides (abundant), Acinos arvensis (not abundant), Origanum vulgare, Teucrium scorodonia, Ajuga reptans, Prunella vulgaris, Euphrasia cf. stricta, Veronica arvensis, V. serpyllifolia, Scrophularia nodosa, Succisa pratensis (some plants), Hieracium pilosella, Leontodon saxatilis, Inula conyzae, Bellis perennis, Arctium sp, Aira praecox (several patches), Catapodium rigidum, Convallaria majalis (one patch), Listera ovata (> 5 plants), Asplenium ruta-muraria (boulders),... On the scree slopes and their more or less wooded flats according to the places, were noted: Sagina apetala, Arenaria serpyllifolia, Hypericum hirsutum, Fragaria vesca, Potentilla neumanniana, Sanguisorba minor, Euphorbia amygdaloides, Geranium robertianum, Vincetoxicum hirundinaria (abundant), Cynoglossum officinale, Teucrium scorodonia, Ajuga reptans, Clinopodium vulgare, Veronica officinalis, Verbascum sp. , Carex digitata, C. sylvatica, Arum maculatum, Dryopteris filix-mas (not abundant),...; bryophytes.
