ATSF 1642 began life in 1927 at the American Car & Foundry works. It was part of the first 150 new steel-sided cabooses built for the Santa Fe as the company transitioned from wood to steel. It was in service on the Santa Fe until 1976, when it was rebuilt and renumbered as ATSF 999913.

The caboose was retired and donated to the Galveston Railroad Museum. Staff repainted and renumbered it to its original 1642.

The caboose received extensive water damage caused by Hurricane Ike in 2008. In 2013 a local Eagle Scout aspirant and his Troop took on the huge project of restoring 1642. The surfaces were scraped, rust-inhibited and repainted, both in and out.

The caboose can be entered (inside has been stripped but basic configuration is still evident).

On museum display.
