[DE] "Natürlich ist es Geschmackssache, ob Ihnen der Potsdamer Platz mit seinen imposanten Hochhäusern gefällt. Die Architektur lädt jedoch auf jeden Fall dazu ein, die Stadt nicht nur aus der Frosch- sondern auch aus der Vogelperspektive zu erleben. Doch bereits aus der Froschperspektive können Sie etwas entdecken, das schon so manchen ins Grübeln brachte. Hier steht mitten auf dem Platz der Nachbau der ersten Ampel Berlins. Damals wie heute charakteristisch mit 3 verschiedenfarbigen Ampelleuchten und einer Uhr auf jeder der 5 Seiten.
Die historische Ampel wurde 1924 aufgestellt. Und das war angesichts des unbändigen Verkehrs zu dieser Zeit auch dringend erforderlich. Immerhin zählte der Potsdamer Platz damals zu den verkehrsreichsten Plätzen Europas. Hier gab es nicht nur S- und U-Bahnanschlüsse, sondern auch sage und schreibe 26 Straßenbahn- und 5 Buslinien. Ganz zu schweigen vom enormen Verkehrsaufkommen durch Autos und einer beachtlichen Zahl an Reisenden, die täglich den Bahnhof ansteuerten. Klar, dass der arme Schutzmann, der vom Hochstand aus mittels einer Trompete versuchte das Getümmel zu bändigen, völlig überfordert war.
Erdacht hat sich die 3 Meter hohe, quadratische Verkehrsampel der deutsche Architekt Jean Krämer, dessen Entwurf an die damals üblichen amerikanischen Ampeltürme angelehnt war. In den Folgejahren wurde sie zum Wahrzeichen der Berlins.
Doch die Bedeutung und das pulsierende Geschehen rund um den Potsdamer Platz endete durch die Zerstörung zahlreicher Gebäude im zweiten Weltkrieg. Der Bau der Mauer 1961 “verurteilte” den Platz für 28 Jahre zum Grenzgebiet mit dem breitesten Todesstreifen der Stadt.
Nach der Wiedervereinigung erblühte der Platz zu neuem Leben und ist heute für jeden einen Besuch wert. Und der Ampelturm? Der wurde 1997 wieder an Ort und Stelle aufgestellt und jeder, der seine Geschichte nicht kennt wird ihn wohl auch künftig für einen verirrten Leuchtturm halten."

Der Ampelturm mit Hochstand besitzt eine Höhe von 8,50 Metern und einen Durchmesser von 2,50 Metern. In dem verglasten Hochstand war ein Polizist damit beschäftigt den Verkehr zu regeln, damit es nicht zu unnötigen Staus kommt. Den Hochstand erreichte der Polizist durch eine im Boden der Kanzel befindliche Klappe.

The 3 metre high, square traffic light was conceived by the German architect Jean Krämer, whose design was based on the American traffic light towers customary at the time. In the following years it became the landmark of Berlin.
But the importance and pulsating events around Potsdamer Platz ended with the destruction of numerous buildings during the Second World War. The construction of the Wall in 1961 "condemned" the square for 28 years to the border area with the widest death strip of the city.
After reunification, the square blossomed into new life and is now worth a visit for everyone. And the traffic light tower? It was put up again in 1997 and everyone who doesn't know its history will probably consider it a lost lighthouse in the future."
