"Coat of arms of the city of Saarbrücken
The current coat of arms of Saarbrücken has existed since Saarbrücken became a major city in 1909. A suggestion for the design of the coat of arms came from Kaiser Wilhelm II. In the original form, the two small fields were to be quarter-circular. However, at the request of Wilhelm II, they were changed to square shapes.
The new coat of arms was composed of one element from each of the original coats of arms of the three parts of the town that had united: The rose comes from the coat of arms of St. John, the tools from the coat of arms of Malstatt-Burbach and the lion from Saarbrücken. The coat of arms has a black and silver shield border, within which the content is divided into three fields."
