Alfonso II de Asturias (c. 760-842), apodado «el Casto», fue rey de Asturias en dos periodos distintos: primero en el año 783 y posteriormente entre los años 791 y 842, en que falleció. A su muerte, Nepociano, un familiar de parentesco no demasiado claro, le disputó el trono al futuro Ramiro I.

Durante su reinado, que abarcó un periodo de cincuenta y un años, se descubrió en Compostela la supuesta tumba del apóstol Santiago.

The sculpture, made of stone, is the work of Víctor Hevia, and is dated 1942. The sculpture presents the following inscription chiseled on the stone:

Alfonso II of Asturias (c. 760-842), nicknamed "el Casto", was king of Asturias in two different periods: first in the year 783 and later between the years 791 and 842, when he died. Upon his death, Nepociano, a relative of unclear kinship, disputed the throne to the future Ramiro I.

During his reign, which spanned a period of fifty-one years, the supposed tomb of the Apostle Santiago was discovered in Compostela.
