"The Hallam Line is a railway connecting Leeds and Sheffield via Castleford in the West Yorkshire Metro area of northern England. It is a slower route from Leeds to Sheffield than the Wakefield line. Services on this line are operated by Northern. Services from Leeds to Nottingham also use the line."

At this point the line is between Wakefield and Sheffield. Wakefield Kirgate station is to the north east of here and Darton station to the south west.
At one time Avondale Street was open to road traffic under the bridge but it is now blocked off and the part under the bridge is only for pedestrians and cyclists.
The bridge has been widened at some point, the west side of the bridge is stone with the arch formed from blue engineering bricks, whilst the east side is made entirely of red bricks.
Very close to here another railway line crosses over the Hallam Line on a viaduct at a higher level that goes to Wakefied Westgate station. This viaduct is visible through the arch on the west side of the bridge.
