This sign is in the car park of a Local Nature Reserve, an area that used to be the site of a coal mine.

Coal mining carried on in this area until 1879 when a large explosion killed 21 men and boys.
After the disaster the land was left to revert back to nature. It did not become marshland until after the Second World War when some drains became blocked and this together with subsidence from the mine cause part of the area to fill with water.
The area was opened to the public in 1984 and became a Local nature Reserve in 1989.
It is now a mixture of wildflower meadow, woodland, wet woodland and open water.
The information board has details of birds, butterflies and insects that can be seen whilst walking in the area.
