Whale Tail - New London, CT - Figurative Public Sculpture on Waymarking.com

The whale tail sculpture, which also serves as a fountain, was created by Alan Cottrill and placed in Parade Plaza in 2011. Parade Plaza is across the street from the New London Amtrak Station.

The sculpture gives the appearance of a whale that came out of the water and has almost completely resubmerged under the water except for the tail. The sculpture has water pouring over the tail and splashes into a small shallow pool for recirculation.

When the sculpture was placed in the plaza and the water was turned on, some homeless people that frequented the area, began using the gentle water off the tail for a place to bath. The water was shut off and the area signed about the water was not fit for bathing, drinking or human consumption purposes. As the pictures in the gallery taken in 2022 that appears to be resolved, because the water is once again flowing.
