"The family is a bronze sculpture realized by Johannes Scherl (1910-2001) from 1983 to 1985 in front of the district administration of Trier-Saarburg at Willy-Brandt-Platz. It reproduces a folk and traditional family image. The family of four with mother, father and two children corresponds to an understanding of family, which in today's society can no longer necessarily be set as absolute, since the idea of what family is, can be or should be has changed and expanded in many respects. Pedestal inscription: The family - symbol of the future and unity of the Trier region and the 2000-year-old city.

On the occasion of the 2000th anniversary of the city of Trier, the Wittlich artist Scherl created a so-called family sculpture in bronze from 1983 to 1985 on behalf of the district council, with the financial support of the city of Trier and the Kreissparkasse Trier-Saarburg.

On an arched pedestal stands a family, on the right edge of the pedestal the father, on the left the mother. In their midst, their young daughter walks ahead, loosely held by the father's hand. Behind this group of three is the son, standing with only one leg on the pedestal.

The arched pedestal takes the shape of the Imperial Baths, thus forming a reference to the city of Trier and its history. The inscription on the pedestal reads: The family - symbol of the future and harmony of the Trier region and the 2000-year-old city.

Johannes Scherl was born on May 20, 1910, the sixth of seven children. After his apprenticeship, he attended a technical college and an academy before opening his workshop on the Schaff an der Lieser in Wittlich in 1933."
