The old city of Amersfoort in the Netherlands was the original for Amersfoort in Long Island (now Flatlands/New York) and Amersfoort in South-Africa.

NL Amersfoort is een grote stad in Nederland. Amersfoortse kolonisten stichtten de steden Amersfoort op Long Island in de VS en in Zuid-Afrika.

Amersfoort is een stad en gemeente in de provincie Utrecht, Nederland. Op 1 december 2021 telde de gemeente 158.531 inwoners, waarmee het de op een na grootste van de provincie en de vijftiende van het land is. Amersfoort is ook een van de grootste Nederlandse spoorwegknooppunten met zijn drie stations - Amersfoort Centraal, Schothorst en Vathorst - vanwege de ligging aan twee van de belangrijkste spoorlijnen van oost naar west en noord naar zuid van Nederland. Amersfoort bestond in 2009 750 jaar als stad.

Er zijn overblijfselen gevonden van nederzettingen in het Amersfoortse gebied van rond 1000 voor Christus, maar de naam Amersfoort, naar een doorwaadbare plaats in de rivier de Amer, tegenwoordig de Eem genoemd, komt pas in de 11e eeuw voor. De stad groeide rond wat nu bekend staat als het centrale plein, de Hof, waar de bisschoppen van Utrecht een rechtbank vestigden om het gebied "Gelderse Vallei [ nl ]" te beheersen. In 1259 kreeg het stadsrechten van de bisschop van Utrecht, Hendrik I van Vianden. Rond 1300 werd een eerste verdedigingsmuur, gemaakt van baksteen, voltooid. Kort daarna werd de noodzaak van uitbreiding van de stad duidelijk en rond 1380 werd begonnen met de bouw van een nieuwe muur en voltooid rond 1450. De beroemde Koppelpoort, een gecombineerd land en waterpoort, maakt deel uit van deze tweede muur. De eerste muur werd afgebroken en er werden huizen voor in de plaats gebouwd. De huidige Muurhuizenstraat bevindt zich op de exacte locatie van de eerste muur; de gevels van de woningen zijn op de funderingen van de eerste stadsmuur gebouwd.

Vanaf 1636 kocht een handjevol inwoners van Nieuw-Amsterdam grote stukken landbouwgrond in een gebied in het westen van Long Island waar de grond buitengewoon vruchtbaar was. Elf jaar later waren er genoeg inwoners om de plaats als stad te benoemen. Amersfoort herinnerde zich de stad Amersfoort, nabij Utrecht, in Nederland. Tegen 1654 was de stad groot genoeg om magistraten, militie-officieren en natuurlijk tavernes te hebben. Het volgende jaar werd de naburige stad Midwout, die een kerk bouwde voor gebruik door alle inwoners van het gebied, gedwongen de gemeente Nieuw-Nederland te vragen de inwoners van Amersfoort te bevelen te helpen hout kappen en slepen voor de kerk. Tegen 1656 hadden de bewoners meer verantwoordelijkheid op zich genomen voor hun religieus welzijn: ze sloten zich bij Midwout aan en verzochten de inwoners van Breuckelen hen te helpen een predikant voor de kerk te betalen.

Onder de Engelsen werd Amersfoort Flatlands. Tegenwoordig is Flatlands een wijk in het zuidoosten van Brooklyn die een klein deel van het oorspronkelijke stadsgebied beslaat. Pieter Claesen Wyckoff bouwde zijn huis in Amersfoort in 1652, en het (veelal gerenoveerde) gebouw staat er nog steeds, en is een van de oudste gebouwen in New York.

Amersfoort is een kleine stad (ongeveer 12.000 inwoners) in de provincie Mpumalanga in Zuid-Afrika. De stad werd in 1888 gesticht rond een Nederlands Hervormde kerk die in 1876 werd gebouwd. Liggend op 1.664 m boven zeeniveau in de bovenloop van het stroomgebied van de Vaal aan de oevers van de Schulpspruit, werd het gebied voor het eerst bewoond door Europeanen in 1876 toen twee boeren uit de omgeving schonken land aan de kerk, waar ds. Frans Lion Cachet overging tot de bouw van een Nederlands Hervormde kerk. Het nieuwe dorp is vernoemd naar de woonplaats (in Nederland) van de Nederlandse boeren. Toen het gebied te klein werd voor het groeiende dorp, werd er meer land gekocht van een van de oorspronkelijke schenkers en werd de stad uitgeroepen in 1888. De brug over de rivier de Vaal is gebouwd in 1896 en is een rijksmonument

Amersfoort is a city and municipality in the province of Utrecht, Netherlands. As of 1 December 2021, the municipality had a population of 158,531, making it the second-largest of the province and fifteenth-largest of the country. Amersfoort is also one of the largest Dutch railway junctions with its three stations—Amersfoort Centraal, Schothorst and Vathorst—due to its location on two of the Netherlands' main east to west and north to south railway lines. Amersfoort marked its 750th anniversary as a city in 2009.

Remains of settlements in the Amersfoort area from around 1000 BC have been found, but the name Amersfoort, after a ford in the Amer River, today called the Eem, did not appear until the 11th century. The city grew around what is now known as the central square, the Hof, where the Bishops of Utrecht established a court in order to control the "Gelderse Vallei [nl]" area. It was granted city rights in 1259 by the bishop of Utrecht, Henry I van Vianden. A first defensive wall, made out of brick, was finished around 1300. Soon after, the need for enlargement of the city became apparent and around 1380 the construction of a new wall was begun and completed around 1450. The famous Koppelpoort, a combined land and water gate, is part of this second wall. The first wall was demolished and houses were built in its place. Today's Muurhuizen (wallhouses) Street is at the exact location of the first wall; the fronts of the houses are built on top of the first city wall's foundations.

Beginning in 1636, a handful of New Amsterdam residents bought large tracts of farmland in an area of western Long Island in which the soil was unusually fertile. Eleven years later, there were enough residents to warrant naming the place as a town. Amersfoort recalled the city of Amersfoort, near Utrecht, in the Netherlands. By 1654, the town was sizable enough to have magistrates, militia officers, and of course taverns. The following year the neighboring town of Midwout, which was building a church for the use of all area residents, was forced to ask the council of New Netherland to order the citizens of Amersfoort to help cut and haul timber for the church. By 1656, the residents had taken on more responsibility for their religious welfare: they joined with Midwout in petitioning that the residents of Breuckelen help them pay for a minister for the church.

Under the English, Amersfoort became Flatlands. Today Flatlands is a neighborhood of southeast Brooklyn that occupies a small portion of the original town's area. Pieter Claesen Wyckoff built his house in Amersfoort in 1652, and the (much renovated) building still stands, and is one of the oldest structures in New York.

Amersfoort is a small town (population around 12.000) in the Mpumalanga province in South-Africa. The town was established in 1888 around a Dutch Reformed Church which was built in 1876. Lying at 1,664 m above sea level in the upper reaches of the Vaal River basin on the banks of the Schulpspruit, the area was first settled by Europeans in 1876 when two farmers of the area donated land to the church, where Rev. Frans Lion Cachet proceeded to build a Dutch Reformed church. The new village was named after the hometown (in the Netherlands) of the Dutch farmers. When the area became too small for the growing village, more land was purchased from one of the original donors and the town was proclaimed in 1888. The bridge over the Vaal River was built in 1896 and is a national monument
