[FR] C’était la principale porte défensive de la ville qui servit également de prison jusqu’à sa destruction. La rue, originellement appelée rue du Dauphin, puis de la Dauphine-et-du-Dauphin, s’est définitivement dénommée rue Dauphine en 1888. C’est l’une des rues les plus anciennes de la ville, entre la porte aux Guesdons et la porte Malconseil, où se succèdent plusieurs maisons du XVIIe siècle. Autrefois ces demeures étaient habitées par des bourgeois, marchands ou officiers de justice. Au n° 10, se dresse un hôtel ayant appartenu à Edme Crublier de Saint-Cyran (1707-1784), avocat au Parlement, procureur du roi ; ce fut également la maison natale de l’industriel du textile Marcel Boussac (1889-1980) dont l’usine familiale de confection était installée en face de la gare. Au n° 21, l’hôtel de Condé, offre une disposition classique pour un hôtel du XVIIe siècle, avec un corps principal entre cour et jardin. L’accès à la cour se fait par un portail Louis XIII comportant deux pilastres à bossages, supportant un fronton au-dessus d’un arc en plein cintre.

[EN] This street was formerly accessed via the Porte aux Guesdons, an old gate which was built in the 15th century. It was the city’s main defensive gate and also served as a prison until it was demolished in 1845. The street, originally known as the Rue du Dauphin, and then the Rue de la Dauphine-et-du-Dauphin, was given the permanent name, Rue Dauphine, in 1888. It is one of the city’s oldest streets, stretching from the Porte aux Guesdons to the Porte Malconseil, and it boasts a series of 17th-century houses. These houses were once the homes of the bourgeoisie, merchants and court officials. The house at no. 10 belonged to Edme Crublier de Saint-Cyran (1707-1784), a lawyer in parliament and king’s prosecutor. The house also saw the birth of the textile manufacturer Marcel Boussac (1889-1980), whose family garment factory stood opposite the railway station. The Hôtel de Condé, at no. 21, is laid out in traditional 17th-century style, with a main building situated between a courtyard and a garden. The courtyard is accessed via a Louis XIII-style gateway consisting of two bossed pilasters supporting a pediment above a semi-circular arch.
