The Chinatown Gateway is a traditional paifang style archway given to Boston from the The Republic of China on Taiwan. Boston and the capital of Taiwan, Taipei, are sister cities. The archway was commissioned by the commissioned by the China Trade Center and designed by David Judelson. It was given to Boston and erected in 1982.
A sign on the south end of the archway is inscribed:
