NL Vanaf een afstandje zag ik hier al een mooi standbeeld op een zuil staan. Het was me al meteen duidelijk wie het voorstelde. St. Joris op het paard, niet toevallig staande voor de St. Joriskerk in het centrum van Amersfoort.

“Sint Joris te paard” is een geschenk aan de stad Amersfoort ter gelegenheid van haar 700-jarig bestaan in 1959. Het beeld is gemaakt door Piet Esser. Oorspronkelijk stond het beeld op een lage sokkel op het oude marktplein van Amersfoort, de Hof, schuin tegenover de ingang van de Sint Joriskerk. Van 1989 tot 1991 werd de Hof opnieuw ingericht. Ondanks protesten werd “Sint Joris te paard” verplaatst naar de Groenmarkt. Het beeld kwam op een hoge pilaar te staan.

Sint Joris (Lod [Palestina], 270 – Nicomedia [Klein-Azië], 303): de helper in nood. Volgens de overlevering heeft hij een draak gedood. De draak is symbool voor het heidendom. De overwinning op de draak is symbool voor de bekering tot het christendom. Sint Joris is de beschermheilige van Amersfoort.

“Saint George on horseback” is a gift to the city of Amersfoort on the occasion of its 700th anniversary in 1959. The statue was made by Piet Esser. Originally, the statue stood on a low pedestal on the old market square of Amersfoort, the Hof, diagonally opposite the entrance of the Sint Joriskerk. From 1989 to 1991, the Hof was redecorated. Despite protests, “Sint Joris on horseback” was moved to the Groenmarkt. The statue was placed on a tall pillar.

Saint George (Lod [Palestine], 270 – Nicomedia [Asia Minor], 303): the helper in need. According to tradition, he killed a dragon. The dragon is a symbol of paganism. The victory over the dragon is symbolic of conversion to Christianity. Saint George is the patron saint of Amersfoort.
