Tiene planta de planta de cruz latina, con dos sacristías, a ambos lados del altar mayor. En el lado derecho se encuentra el camarín que en origen fue una puerta de entrada lateral. En el izquierdo, el campanario.
Esta iglesia se encuentra situada en la Ciudadela de la Villa, y fue construida sobre la mezquita mayor de la localidad con el patrocinio de los Reyes Católicos.
Se comienzan las obras a finales del siglo XV, si bien se fueron prolongando hasta el año 1614, aunque con algunas interrupciones. Era éste un proyecto muy ambicioso que por la falta de financiación no se pudo acabar, pues se levantaron la cabecera y el crucero de la iglesia en estilo gótico final, pero los dos tramos siguientes de la nave presentan materiales y formas que restan unidad al conjunto.
La fábrica de ladrillo de los tramos finales frente a los sillares de piedra del resto y la pervivencia de algunos arcos de herradura recortados sobre la línea de impostas, dan a entender que son elementos originales de la mezquita precedente.
Que no quedó acabada también se percibe en su fachada, que no es más que una máscara levantada en los años 60 del pasado siglo XX, cubriendo un hastial inacabado.
Entre los maestros que intervinieron en su edificación sólo se sabe del maestro mayor del arzobispado de Sevilla, Pedro Díaz de Palacios, responsable de las obras en los primeros años del siglo XVII.
La iglesia consta de una sola nave y presenta un marcado crucero.
Su estructura vertical está formada por pilares de sección circular que sostienen las bóvedas de nervaduras estrelladas y de terceletes con que se cubre la nave en su cabecera.
Los dos tramos de los pies ya citados se estructuran a través de arcos ligeramente apuntados, que originariamente pudieron ser de herradura.

The church has a single nave and has a marked transept.
Its vertical structure is made up of circular section pillars that support the vaults with star ribs and tiercerons with which the nave is covered at its head.
The two sections of the feet already mentioned are structured through slightly pointed arches, which originally could have been horseshoe shaped.
