Charles Marion Russell wasn’t born in Montana but he did move there at an early age and lived in the Great Falls area for most of his life. A prolific artist, C. M. Russell created over 4000 works including paintings, drawings and sculptures. His paintings or drawings have appeared on several U.S. postage stamps including this one celebrating the 100th anniversary of Montana’s statehood.

The painting is a self-portrait showing Charlie on a horse gesturing to other cowboys and Native Americans whom he considered his friends. In the background is Square Butte, the Missouri River and the Rocky Mountains way off in the distance. Several formations in Montana are known as Square Butte. The one in the painting is in Cascade County, about 20 miles west of Great Falls.

The Montana Historical Society is located in Helena, close to the capitol building. It contains a substantial collection of C. M. Russell paintings and sculpture as well as other exhibits on the history of the state.
