The city of Bozeman is a college town, with a large School of Art, hence scads of resident artists. This lead to a sincere dedication to the arts by the City of Bozeman, resulting in dozens and dozens of works on display throughout the city. Certainly the largest gathering of art works is at the Bozeman Public Library, the majority of the works located in an art park behind (south of) the library,
Bozeman Sculpture Park.
A work by sculptor Bill Vielehr,
Reconstructed Column is one of the more simplistic works to be found here. Comprised of a series of sheet steel tubes, like a sloppy stack of tin cans,
Reconstructed Column appears as a tall column that has sustained substantial damage and has been only minimally "reconstructed".
We suspect that
Reconstructed Column is intended to convey an important metaphysical message, but must confess that, should that be so, the message has sailed over our heads. Actually a well known and prolific artist and sculptor,
Bill Vielehr has done, among many others, a number of sculptures of a similar nature which are widely displayed.
Surrounding the
Emerson Center for the Arts & Culture one will encounter quite a few more art works, all well worth taking the time to pause and ponder over.
Bill Vielehr
Bill Vielehr is the most nationally-exhibiting artist to ever come out of Colorado. He will be participating this summer in the most significant sculpture exhibit to happen in Chicago in many years. He is one of 58 sculptors who are putting their work in the parks along Michigan Avenue for one year during the time that Art Expo Chicago at Navy Pier and the International Sculpture Center convention take place. The ISC Conference, which is centered at the Chicago Art Institute, will tour the exhibit.
Currently Vielehr's piece "Attack on Meaning" is on display in Grand Junction, Colorado (Art On The Corner); "Reconstructed Column" is in Lafayette, Colorado (Art on the Streets); "Unconcealed Column" will be installed in Lake Oswego, Oregon, as part of Gallery Without Walls, a nationally-juried show, in July; "Metal Response" is the sculpture that will be exhibited in Chicago.
In addition, Vielehr has pieces currently on display in South San Francisco, Bozeman (MT), and Wayne State in Wayne, Nebraska.

Inside Art Crossing
Mission Statement:
To place public art that enhances the cultural experience for Bozeman area residents and visitors to the Gallatin Valley.
Vision:
The Gallatin Art Crossing (G.A.C.) exhibit hosts a variety of artwork introducing viewers to many artistic approaches. The main focus of the organization is to select and place sculptures throughout the Bozeman area. All sculptures, unless noted on their plaque, are available for purchase during their tenure in the program An additional goal of the program is to add at least one piece to our permanent public collection each year. The community assists in this process by voting for their favorite sculptures online which helps the board select the People’s Choice Award winner. The winning piece, along with two to three other pieces are then voted on by the G.A.C. board for possible purchase and permanent placement.
