A long concrete block resembling a barrier laid diagonally above the ground. On it is an inscription in Latvian: Behind these gates the earth groans. There are places that are silent, and yet they roar outright, roaring with immeasurable pain. One of them is the former concentration camp in Salaspils, fifteen kilometers from Riga.
Between 1941 and 1944, 45,000 Riga Jews passed through Salaspils, and 55,000 mostly Jews from Europe. They murdered everyone.
