En el Chorro, una de las barriadas de Alora, separada por unos 13 kilómetros del núcleo central, surgió la parroquia de la Medalla Milagrosa, a raíz del movimiento de población tan importante que tuvo lugar a principios del siglo pasado, cuando comenzaron las obras de los pantanos del Guadalhorce. En poco tiempo se multiplicó la población venida de diversos lugares a trabajar y a vivir en estos hermosísimos parajes, y poco después se pensó en la necesidad de atender educativa y espiritualmente a estas familias.
Así se fundó la iglesia y una escuela atendida por las Hijas de la Caridad, por iniciativa del ingeniero D. Rafael Benjumea, a quien el rey Alfonso XIII nombraría Conde del Guadalhorce. Fruto de la capacidad creativa del mismo ingeniero es también su templo hermano en la barriada de Las Mellizas, que juntas constituyeron una única parroquia.
Actualmente la vida religiosa de la barriada del Chorro se desarrolla muy unida a la de la parroquia de la Encarnación, situada en el centro del pueblo, debido a que desde el año 70 dejó de existir tanto la escuela como la presencia de las hijas de la Caridad y del sacerdote, que pasó a atender esta zona desde Alora. No obstante, se siguen celebrando allí los grandes momentos de la vida de las familias, así como la Eucaristía dominical.
Es una iglesia luminosa, recogida, con encanto y personalidad, enclavada entre algarrobos, eucaliptos y pinos ante una explanada sombreada, cer ca del embalse. Los vecinos, que le tienen un gran apego, se encargan de cuidarla con esmero por lo que se encuentra en excelente estado de conservación.
En el Chorro se celebra con gran alborozo la fiesta de la Virgen de la Medalla Milagrosa, cada 27 de noviembre. Debido a que la población del Chorro se está viendo enriquecida con personas procedentes de muchos otros lugares de Europa y más lejos aún, y con el deseo de crear lazos y forjar relaciones de buena vecindad, el pasado año, después de la Eucaristía, celebraron un banquete en un auténtico #comedor del mundo#, pues se avisó a todos los que desearan participar aportando alguna espec ialidad de su tierra de origen, y tanto el encuentro festivo, como la degustación fueron una experiencia inolvidable para todos. In El Chorro, one of the neighborhoods of Alora, separated by some 13 kilometers from the central nucleus, the parish of the Miraculous Medal arose, as a result of the important population movement that took place at the beginning of the last century, when the works of the the Guadalhorce swamps. In a short time, the population that came from different places to work and live in these beautiful places multiplied, and shortly after the need to attend educationally and spiritually to these families was thought of.
This is how the church and a school attended by the Daughters of Charity were founded, at the initiative of the engineer D. Rafael Benjumea, whom King Alfonso XIII would name Count of Guadalhorce. In El Chorro, the feast of the Virgin of the Miraculous Medal is celebrated with great joy, every November 27.
