Who is Dave McAfee and why would he matter to the Rodale fitness park?

Well, as it turns out, Dave was the publisher of Rodale's "Scuba Diving" magazine.

Rodale is a publisher of fitness, activity, organic gardening and lifestyle books and magazines, headquartered in Emmaus, PA. The sales of their publications provided much positive feedback to many communities, and the company bought this parcel of land, developed the fitness park and donated it to Lehigh County.

South of the sculpture garden is a stately oak, barren in winter, but awesome all other times of the year. It has a stone memorial to Dave McAfee at its' base.

Professor Google allowed me to find the obituary of Dave McAfee, who was living in Savannah, GA at the time:

"David S. McAfee, 39, of Savannah, Ga., formerly of Birmingham, Mich., and Allentown, died Saturday, Dec. 20, at home. He was the husband of Marilyn G. McAfee.

A graduate of Miami University of Oxford, Ohio, he was the Detroit sales manager for Rodale Press before becoming ill.

Born in Elmhurst, Ill., he was a son of William J. and Joan D. McAfee of Pisgah Forest, N.C.

He was a member of the Pinewild Country Club of Pinehurst, N.C., Landings Club of Savannah, Detroit Golf Club and the Adraft Club of Detroit.

Survivors: Wife and parents and a sister, Elizabeth A. of Indianapolis, Ind."
Location of the tree: It is in a County Park

Type of tree: Oak
